While homosexuality is still illegal in 40 percent of the world’s countries, 41 of the 53 Commonwealth countries make homosexuality a crime. In these countries, laws make it illegal to be gay. Many of the laws in these countries date all the way back to colonial rule. In Australia, homosexuality was illegal as late as 1997. The Commonwealth heads of government meeting, which takes place next week, does not have the issue on the agenda.
